Double blog post!!!
Ok, so I haven't done a list-type of post since I first got here, so I figured now would be a good time to do another. Here are some notes of interest that I've experienced in the past year:
Food:
Tteokbokki is definitely my favorite food. It's crazy spicy, but oh-so-good.
I am now a fan of tofu.
Tot'ori-muk is something I never thought I'd like, when I heard it was made from acorns. (How many Americans think about the fact that acorns can be used for real food?) But it's lovely. We had some at lunch, I was happy. :)
Kimchi jjigae is the perfect cure for stuffy noses brought on by winter colds.
Speaking of, kimchi is absolutely delicious. I like most of the varieties.
People:
I've actually never had an adjuma yell at me. I must have a likable face. :) I had a nice conversation with an adjuma yesterday actually. Well, as much as I could have with my limited Korean.
I can make my way onto a crowded bus or subway with the best of them.
I've said "Hello" to students in halls more times this year than I probably have my entire life.
I've been stared at more times than I can count.
I can tell the difference between a Chinese, Korean, and Japanese person, most of the time.
Experiences:
I've seen "Jump!" and "Nanta!" two of Korea's non-verbal shows. Both were amazing fun to watch and I would definitely see them again.
I went camping and climbed a mountain, on my own. I planned the trip and accomplished it all, simply on my own motivation. (I was also for a week after the climb. ha)
I got a tattoo in Korea. Not my first, but still an experience. I now have three languages tattoo'd on me (English, Spanish, Korean).
I went rafting and had an amazing fun time, despite the fact that our tour guide was NOT HAPPY to have foreigners on his raft. He hated having to use English.
I've been to China, and experienced the differences in culture between them and Koreans (Chinese people stare a WHOLE LOT MORE).
I've learned not to play "Rock, paper, scissors" with my students, unless I'm confident that I can win. Or unless I'm ok with having a huge red spot on my forehead from getting flicked when I lose. :P
I've made some amazing friends, seen extraordinary things, and had experiences which I never imagined when I was younger. This has definitely been a great year.
:)
